How to Plan a Luxury Bali Trip

Most visitors enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival, extendable once for a longer stay. Passports generally need at least six months of validity, and an onward or return ticket is usually asked for at check-in.

Every traveller also completes Indonesia's online arrival declaration shortly before flying. Fill it in on the way to the airport rather than after landing — the queue at Ngurah Rai is far shorter when your documents are already in order.

Bali has two seasons. The dry season, roughly April to October, brings the clearest skies, calmest seas and the best conditions for island days, yacht charters and cliff-side dining. July, August and the New Year period are the busiest and priciest.

The green season, November to March, is warm with short heavy afternoon showers. Villas are quieter and better value, mornings are usually bright, and Ubud and the rice terraces are at their most beautiful. Nyepi, Bali's day of silence in March, closes the island for twenty-four hours — worth planning around either way.

A luxury Bali trip divides into four costs: your villa or resort, private transport, experiences, and dining. Villas are usually the largest line, and rates swing widely between peak and green season for exactly the same property.

Private transport is where comfort compounds. A chauffeur held for the day costs a fraction of the villa rate and removes every negotiation, every ride-hailing wait and every wrong turn. Experiences — a private yacht, a helicopter transfer, a Nusa Penida island day, a spa afternoon — are quoted per party and best chosen before you arrive, when the good slots are still open.

Bali rewards two bases rather than one. Most guests pair a coastal stay — Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu or Nusa Dua — with a few nights inland in Ubud, then move between them by private car.

Seminyak and Canggu suit dining and beach clubs, Uluwatu the cliffs and sunsets, Nusa Dua calm water and families, and Ubud the rice terraces, temples and spas. Nothing is far apart in kilometres, but Bali's traffic makes the choice of base matter more than the map suggests.

There is no rail network and journeys take longer than distances imply. A private chauffeur held by the hour or the day is how most luxury travellers move: air-conditioned, unhurried, and able to wait while you linger somewhere longer than planned.

Start with your airport arrival, add a chauffeur for the days you plan to explore, and let your concierge sequence the rest so you are never rushing between a temple, a restaurant and a sunset.

Plan two anchors a day at most — a morning experience and an evening one — and leave the middle open. Bali's pleasures are slow, and an over-scheduled week is the most common regret we hear.
